My story of finding a heart-aligned career and an invitation for you

As we explore a purpose-filled career, we need to let our creative and joyful selves flourish. Art by me.

Do you have a successful career and yet you long for something more?

Perhaps you are looking for work aligned with your life purpose but don't know what to do next?

Or maybe you know the field or the role you want to work in next but can't see how it could ever work?

Or maybe you wonder if you can ever be happy even with a career change?

May be you worry and try to tell yourself that you shouldn't rock the boat you are on and you should just be happy with what you have - and yet, and yet your heart longs for something more. You wonder or doubt if it is even possible to have a career that feels aligned with your heart and joy.

I know, I have been there. My first career a user researcher was super rewarding. I worked in that field for 14 years, and then my heart started to long for more. So I quit my job in 2018, set up a freelance business, and started my journey to find the next career. Because having a career and life aligned with my heart is important to me.

This time of transformation can be a joyful exploration instead of suffering...and you don't need to walk this path alone...walk it with support, gentleness, and love.

My journey to my next heart-aligned career

It took around six years for me to find my next career steps. These years were super enjoyable where I came home to myself.

Over these years, I completed programs like the altMBA, Feminine Embodiment Coaching Certification, launched courses and workshops, joined 12-step programs, went for a 10-day Vipassana retreat, made lots of art and wrote, launched a book which became an Amazon NL bestseller, learned and practiced different types of meditation, worked with coaches and underwent therapy, started volunteering regularly, became a support family member for a beautiful kid, and so on.

The journey for an external transformation led me within and it became a rewarding exploration of meeting all parts of me, including the parts I think of as "less" - the scared, angry, resentful, uncertain, protective parts of me.

Finding or moving into a career or life aligned with your heart is the most worthwhile journey you will ever make...it is a process of homecoming - to your body and your inner self...and your body can be one of your biggest allies in this journey.

And finally, finally all the work and explorations I had been doing clicked. In my first session as an embodiment coach, I felt this feeling of rightness in my whole being. This is where I am supposed to be.

I had arrived at the next step of my career! It took me a few more coaching sessions to believe it though 😀.

Lessons learned from my journey

Having gone through this process, here are a few things I have learned:

  1. Finding or moving into a career or life aligned with your heart is the most worthwhile journey you will ever make. Don't try to minimize it, instead follow the calling of your soul and guard that inner flame with love.

  1. To find our purpose we first need to find ourselves. The process of building a life and career aligned with our hearts is asking you to travel within. It often involves a transformation from the inside out. It is a process of homecoming - to your body and your inner self.

  1. Your body can be one of your biggest allies in times of transformation and crisis. It can be a compass in your journey. Your body is where you can meet your whole self - including welcoming your fears, uncertainties, doubts and the parts of you that feel like "less". Being present with both moments of discomfort and pleasure has created great shifts for me.

  1. You don't need to walk this path alone. I have had so much help along the way, especially from coaches and my therapist and I am so thankful for that, because it made it easier to stay on my path and walk it with gentleness and love.

  1. It may take time to reach where you want to go but that time of transformation can be a joyful exploration instead of suffering.

  1. Instead of doubting yourself or trying to convince yourself, get started on your journey as soon as possible. Move in a direction that lights you up – no matter how trivial the step seems. The only moments I regret over the last 6 years are when I was frozen with worry and not moving forward.
